Counterwill is the most impactful dynamic you’ve likely never heard of! Counterwill is often misunderstood, leading parents to the conclusion that their child is being intentionally defiant or oppositional. These conclusions aren’t true and aren’t helpful. What *is* helpful is when we understand this common and well-intentioned human instinct; then we can learn how to work *with* counterwill, rather than battling against it!

Attachment is inherently hierarchical. In the parent-child (parent-teen) relationship parents are meant to be in the role of ‘provider’ and kids are meant to be in the role of ‘dependent'. This hierarchy can - for myriad reasons - become inverted which leads to all sorts of issues: bossiness, opposition, aggression, anxiety and eating issues, to name just a few. Most parents who have an alpha child feel that parenting is exceedingly difficult and frustrating. The good news is that when we understand the nature of the alpha-dependent relationship - how its meant to work and how and why it can go awry - we begin to see the path forward. In this course, we will take a deep dive into alpha-dependent dynamics and how to get things back on track - back into “right relationship”.

In this evening talk, we will explore the common root of all forms of attack, be it a tantrum, a slammed door, a barrage of swear words or self-attack. Frustration, one of our three primal mammalian emotions, lies at the core of all of these situations. When we understand frustration – its purpose, the various forms it can take, the things that evoke it and, most importantly, how we can support “alternate outcomes” when it arises – we can begin to take up a better relationship with both our own frustration and the frustration of our kids.

We all want to support our kids in becoming emotionally mature and healthy, but often the path to doing so seems unclear. In this class we will explore Gordon Neufeld’s 5-Step Model of Emotional Development, which can help us to understand how healthy emotional development unfolds, and the specific ways that we can support the process.
-
Class will meet on Zoom from 10am-12pm PST on 4/8 & 4/15. Each class will be recorded with each recording available for seven days. Crossing the bridge from childhood to adulthood has never been so daunting. The time of adolescence is longer than ever and yet society today offers little support in understanding or facilitating this transition. The objective of this course is to make sense of your adolescent from the inside out.
-
This class is offered by the Neufeld Institute. Registration and all course communication will happen through the NI office. I will be teaching the course along with two colleagues. For more information: https://neufeldinstitute.org/course/making-sense-of-adolescence/
